Build a plant colony in this real-time strategy game. Evolve your plants and ward off invading species... but be sure to avoid undesirable mutations. Read the description for controls and tips. There are objectives to complete levels but the game is primarily intended as a casual sandbox.

Gameplay

[WASD] or [RMB+Drag] Let's you move the camera around.

Select a tile with [LMB]. Slow down Time with [SPACE]

Grow Your infection by cloning your first plant. Select it with LMB and wait for it to finish growing and maturing. You can autoselect the nearest matured plant by pressing [TAB].

Press Clone once it's finished maturing. It will shoot off a new seed and attempt to sail in the direction of your pheromone trace. You can move the pheromone trace around with [MMB], or select the desired tile and press [SHIFT].

When the cloned sibling spawns in, it will have slightly mutated traits. Try to specialize traits through selective breeding in order to evolve new species!

If you are unhappy with a sample of foliage, you may mulch it to create goop on the tile. Goop gives a mutation boost to plants that spawn onto it.

The map has five beacons. Grow over them all to progress to the next level.

Not all mutations are desirable, even loyalty can eventually be bred out of a plant.

Genetic traits:

The traits you are provided with are as follows:

  • Agression:  Ability to overtake tiles occupied by enemies
  • Defense: Ability to ward off invading species
  • Growth rate: Speed at which plant establishes itself
  • Health: Ability to not die
  • Reproductivity: Speed at which a plant can develop seeds or send off runners
  • Seed Range: How far the seeds can fly
  • Subservience: Your plant's loyalty... or its likelihood of committing mutiny...

Species

  • Stink Plant: Mutates from plants with strong aggression. Damages hostile organisms around it
  • Barbed Vine: Mutates from plants with strong defense. Resistant to hostile takeover. Grows into 
  • Carpet Weeds: Mutates from plants with strong growth. Grows in quickly to cover space
  • Healing Vera: Mutates from plants with strong health. heals plants around it
  • Pitcher plant: Mutates from plants with strong reproductive. Gives surrounding plants a growth boost
  • Dandy Launcher: Mutates from plants with strong seed range. Shoots seeds far
  • Like-Me-Nots: Mutates from plants with weak subservience. Spreads fast and attempts overtaking you
  • Flesh Invader: ???
  • Machine Plant: ???

Made for Acerola Game Jam 0. I wanted to work in the theme aberration through mutations and evolution. The simple shrubs can be selectively bred to specialize into different traits. There's so much more I would like to do with the complexity, intuity, and player agency in this simulation that will end up turning this into a more long-term project.
